Sadness

“A lot of the times people just do not let us grieve.
It gets put off or bottled up so we can keep on living.
But sadness really isn’t so bad when it’s given a chance to breathe.”

Sometimes, we feel sad.

It’s a natural part of life.

Sadness has its place among the emotions. It makes the good times better – can even help us heal.

The problem starts when it doesn’t resolve itself.

Sometimes, it doesn’t go away.

You’ve felt this way for a long time – maybe even years. Deep underlying sorrow is drifting between the losses you’ve encountered along your way. When you think you’re about to overcome it, something else aggravates it all over again.

Sadness is toxic to your soul if it lasts too long.

I know. It sounds somewhat mystical, but you’re meant for more in this life than just existing. And too much sadness can kill the joy you need for a full life.

Sometimes, it bleeds.

Sometimes, it can bleed into other emotions, such as guilt. Feeling bad when you might or should be feeling good.

Just when you want to allow yourself the slightest bit of joy or fun – you just can’t. You do the self-care strategies you’ve heard or read about, but it’s no good. Your brain nags you – it “tricks” you into remaining sad!

Or how about difficulty celebrating? Even appropriate celebrations don’t feel right. And eventually, you put yourself in a different category from all those “holiday” people.

Sometimes, you need a break.

A pause. A rest. To let your soul catch up – because you’ve been stretched too thin by love or work or suffering.

Unpacking this story can end up being a cleansing and refreshing experience. That’s the true meaning of sadness – the meaning you’ve missed.

No more floating along in an endless sea of loss – but rather, wrapping up the true meanings of difficult things. The true meanings that have avoided you for so long.

You need validation – and a chance to be heard despite the losses. Therapy provides the structure to express these needs.
